Finance Director – FQHC (On-Site Role)

Location: Palm Springs, CA – On-Site
Employment Type: Full-Time, Exempt

About the Role

My client, a Non-profit healthcare provider (FQHC) is seeking an experienced Finance Director to lead daily financial operations, oversee reporting, ensure compliance, and support the continued financial strength of our organization. This role is ideal for a seasoned nonprofit or healthcare finance professional who thrives in a mission-driven environment and enjoys managing both the big picture and the details.

The Finance Director plays a key role in monthly and annual close, financial reporting, budgeting, cash management, grant compliance, and ensuring GAAP-aligned accounting practices across the agency. This leader works closely with the CFO, supervises an experienced finance team, and collaborates across departments to support accurate financial tracking, grant management, and operational decision-making.

What You’ll Do

Leadership & Team Management

Supervise, coach, and develop Finance team members.

  • Review and approve timesheets, conduct regular check-ins, and complete performance evaluations.
  • Partner with People Operations on onboarding, training plans, and performance management.
  • Model and reinforce our mission, values, and leadership behaviors.
  • Develop and monitor department budgets and project schedules.

Financial Operations & Reporting

  • Lead the preparation and review of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
  • Oversee all balance sheet reconciliations and ensure accuracy of general ledger classifications.
  • Manage month-end close timelines and coordinate internal reporting for leadership and the Board.
  • Oversee Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, cash receipts, and disbursements.
  • Monitor daily cash activity and ensure proper internal controls over treasury functions.
  • Ensure all bank accounts are reconciled accurately and timely.

Grant & Program Accounting

  • Supervise the Grants Accounting team to ensure compliance with grant requirements and Federal Uniform Guidance.
  • Collaborate with program managers to ensure proper coding, tracking, and allocation of grant expenses and revenues.
  • Support preparation of grant reports, CMS/PPS/UDS cost reports, and other regulatory filings.

Compliance, Controls & Audit Support

  • Maintain strong internal controls and ensure adherence to Finance policies and procedures.
  • Support financial statement audits, grant audits, payroll audits, and 401(k) audits as the primary point of contact.
  • Ensure accurate completion and filing of 941s, W-2s, 1099s/1096s, property tax documents, and other required filings.
  • Verify credit card reconciliations, receipts, and expense coding.
  • Coordinate with Revivals and Resource Development on compliance and inventory reconciliation processes.

Budgeting & Financial Planning

  • Assist the CFO in developing the annual operating, capital, and grant budgets.
  • Prepare variance analyses and financial models to support organizational decision-making.
  • Provide training to leadership and staff on Finance policies, budgeting, and financial procedures.

Other Responsibilities

  • Prepare economic census submissions, tax filings, and statistical reports.
  • Serve as the primary contact for system reconciliations across accounting, clinic, grants, and development.
  • Support continuous improvement of financial processes and internal controls.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What You’ll Bring

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business.
  • 3+ years of management experience within a Finance department.
  • 5+ years of experience in nonprofit, healthcare (FQHC preferred), and/or grant-funded organizations.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP, nonprofit accounting, and grant compliance.
  • Hands-on experience with general ledger management and financial reporting.
  • High proficiency with Excel, Word, Outlook, and computerized accounting systems.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, analyze data, and meet deadlines.
  • Strong communication skills and commitment to confidentiality and sound judgment.

Preferred

  • CPA certification
  • Experience with Sage Intacct
  • Experience working with healthcare billing, AR, and cost reports
  • Knowledge of MS Access

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • This is an on-site role located in Palm Springs, CA.
  • Primarily office-based with regular sitting, standing, talking, and repetitive motions.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and move as needed throughout the facility.
