Salary : $44,636.80 - $54,246.40 AnnuallyLocation : Desert Hot Springs, CAJob Type: Full TimeJob Number: 2024-0904Department: Public WorksDivision: Public WorksOpening Date: 09/04/2024Description DEFINITION: Under the supervision of the Public Works Director or designee, performs a variety of semi-skilled and skilled duties involved in the maintenance and repair of a multitude of public works and park systems and facilities including roads, utilities, facilities, and landscaped areas; performs specialized projects as required. Examples of Duties Prepares surfaces for paving, mixes cement, breaks up paved surfaces;Uses such hand tools as shovel, rake, jackhammer and tampers;Loads and unloads trucks;Excavates and fills trenches and ditches;Operate compressors and spray rigs;Operate trucks and light mechanical equipment;Performs a variety of semiskilled and unskilled street maintenance and constructions duties;Maintains, mows and water lawns; trims and plants shrubs; cultivates and fertilizes lawns; Sprays weeds; rakes leaves and picks up trash from park areas;Cleans gutters and park pathways;Assists in planting of shrubs;Cleans and performs maintenance work on park equipment, buildings, and facilities; and cleans floors, windows and fixtures in park restrooms;Promote personnel safety programs;May operate a variety of motor-driven equipment, including skip loader, and water truck;Reviews and inspects work in progress and upon completionFills in the "acting" position in the absence of the Sr. Maintenance Worker. Typical Qualifications EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION:Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance or,High school diploma or equivalent;Experience in municipality maintenance desired but not required, and;Valid California driver's license with good driving record at time of appointment Supplemental Information WORKING CONDITIONS: (Physical and Environmental)Essential and marginal functions may require maintaining physical condition necessary for lifting up to 100 lbs., bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling, running, standing, sitting or walking for prolonged periods of time. Ability to work prolonged periods outdoors subject to extreme temperature and other weather related environmental conditions. Maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for: Making observations, communicating with others, reading and writing, operating assigned maintenance equipment and vehicles.PROBATIONARY PERIOD: Employees in this classification serve a probationary period of one (1) year.EMPLOYEE LEAVE: The City offers a generous Vacation and Sick leave program, plus 10 annual holidays and one (1) floating holiday. Employees accrue 80 hours per year of sick leave; employees accrue 80 hours of vacation leave for the first five years; after five years, employees accrue additional vacation leave based on years of service..BACHELOR DEGREE PROGRAM: The City of Desert Hot Springs participates in the Civic Scholars Program and offers its full-time employees the opportunity to earn a bachelor's degree at no cost to the employee. RETIREMENT: The City participates in the Social Security system and all employees are covered by the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS). Employees pay the Member's contribution depending on their prior PERS eligibility. Membership is mandatory.
